Spring Photography Tips

What are some of the things you look forward to when spring comes? When I think of springtime my thoughts go to the beauty of new life. The sprouting of new plants, the blossoms on the trees, flowers blooming. As a photographer, I see all these things as potential income too. This is a great time to hunt out great places for a potential client.  I know that there are peak times during the year for the photography industry. Spring is one of these times. Here are a few things to consider when planning your springtime photo sessions.

  • Wardrobe- When picking a location for a spring shoot you may be tempted to choose a location based on the beauty and colors but I suggest planning your location based on the wardrobe that is selected. Pick colors (two main colors and then three accent colors) that compliment the space you will be displaying the images.
  • Location- Once the wardrobe is decided upon then look for locations, or backdrops that compliment or utilize the wardrobe colors. Orchards make great locations for shoots but make sure you get permission when using someone else’s property. Locations can vary, you want to look for locations that have distinct foregrounds and backgrounds, but you don’t want them to be distracting. Pictures are about the people and not the landscape. You are also going to want to decide the time of day. Midday, when the sun is harshest, might not be a good time to take pictures. Also, have a plan B in case of inclement weather. Springtime has some of the most temperamental weather patterns, so always have a weather eye on the horizon.
  • Backdrop- If you choose to use a backdrop for the session you need to consider two options. Are you going to use a physical backdrop or a digital backdrop? When you are choosing one you want to look at what color scheme the wardrobe has and match it.
  • Props- Finally, are you going to use props in the photoshoot. Make sure you consider the color of the props along with the wardrobe and location.
